Round Robins

Round Robins is comprised of four short studies by four artists looking to maintain our individual voices while exploring our shared interests. Devised as a collaborative experiment, this work is constructed using a round robin model in which we alternate roles of dancer, choreographer, sound designer, and costume designer.

Spring Tides

Commissioned to accompany Judith Shatin's musical composition, "Spring Tides", the work is very much related to the music in timing and intention. "Spring Tides" was inspired by the pull of the moon and sun on the flow of the tides, highest when the moon and sun are directly lined up with the earth. The very highest, or spring tides, occur when the moon is either new or full and the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun are combined.

Toma una inspiración profunda y cierra los ojos..Toma una imagen y déjala flotando en tu mente durante un rato. A su propio tiempo, permite que esta imagen se disuelva en tu cuerpo respira, siente, escucha, huele y saborea... ¿qué se despierta con su efervescencia? RE-INSPIRATÍO Inspiradas por el trabajo de la fotógrafa mexicana Graciela iturbide, surge re-inspiratío; una composición que explora, desde el diálogo y la colaboración entre distintos lenguajes y perspectivas artísticas como la danza, la música, la iluminacón, el video y el dise ño de vestuario, las resonancias generadas por la obra de la fotógrafa. La sencillez, la humildad, la dignidad humana, la identidad, las huellas del hombre a través del tiempo y el espacio, la muerte, lo vital, lo sagrado y el ritual se aferran a las imágenes de Graciela. Con esta propuesta, lejos de buscar una representación o interpretación del trabajo de la fotógrafa, encontramos un punto de partida que nos mueve y nos invita a jugar y a crear. Nos aferramos a su mirada para sumergirnos en sus imágenes con el deseo de encarnarlas y de respirar a través de ellas.

Vía, created transnationally 1,835 miles apart, investigates how dance making reacts and changes to the possibilities and limitations that technology and the internet offer the dance field. It began as an experiment embodying online, virtual spaces that generally diminish interpersonal connections, but results in two physically connected dancing bodies onstage.

La intención es magnificar la idea de que el foro o donde se realiza la danza es un espacio visual en el que las sensaciones producidas por los colores, dise ños y movimientos corporales dan a los espectadores elementos que exaltan las emociones, sin guiarlos demasiado, siempre dejando espacio para la incógnita, la contradicción y lenjuages no verbales. El reto sigue siendo cómo plantear nuestras experiencias, ideas y preocupaciones con narrativas no lineales, con métodos que se ajusten mejor a las intrigas de nuestra propia existencia y utilizando un lenguaje propio que hemos hecho a través de los a ños donde el humor juega un papel central.

Vesna's Fall

Reapers in fall must first calibrate and celebrate their spring. In 1972, Vesna Vulovic fell from the height of 33,330 ft in an exploding airplane onto a frozen mountain side and lived to tell the story. This (mis)fortune, registered as the highest free fall a human being has survived, was brought by a nominal coincidence: Vesna was not scheduled to be on the flight, but had been mixed up with another flight attendant of the same name. Every Vesna shares her name with the springtime goddesses of Slavic mythology who lived in palaces atop mountains enwrapped in magic circles where they discussed the fate of crops and of human beings.

Objects and humans fall because of gravity's pull. Free-falling closed rooms, however, will preclude the local observer inside them from differentiating between gravitational pull and floating in non-gravity.

Singing and springing Vesnas, descending down each February from their palaces to the valley, could only be heard by certain people. Perception is absolutely local (like death). Rituals, names, or numbers may serve to secure the recurrence of common universal units--seasons and whatnot. In return they must obliterate particularities and forget the fact that they did so. No spring is devoid of sacrifices and the sacrificed must not survive. Gravity of numbers is only put to an end by the number of gravities.

Necessary Grace (2011), is an 8 minute solo set to the music of composer/poet Samantha Gorman and Nico Muhly. The work is a meditative journey, exploring the body as spiritual topography and investigating movement as a means for seeking grace. One focal point of this work is Hanson reading one-liner descriptions of people (seemingly at random) from a list in a notebook, the only vestige of the identities of the people being their linguistic descriptors, the demarcators of each identity were just numbers. The work also investigates keeping time.
