Guidelines for Participation as a Presenting Artist
Deadline for proposals Saturday, October 29th, 2011
12 midnight
Please read the following guidelines carefully. By submitting an application to participate in Performática you are agreeing to the conditions set forth below.
Presentation
The goal of the forum is the facilitation of engaged dialogue and collaboration between artists of all media with an interest in reflecting on the basic importance of their relationship to the movement arts.
Performática has been described as a space for renewal. Why do we have hunger for renewal? Renewing our practice, what does this mean? Performática encourages recharging and intensifying our practice in the doing of it. Together we strive towards a space for shared community responsibility, and a platform for realizing personal agency. Heirarchies between students, teachers, history, styles, and economics are destabilized in order to invite alternative ways of being in our practice.
In the past Performática has been a lot about getting to know one another through our respective performance and pedagogical practice. This year we would like to ask what happens when we go deeper. We would like to devote time to finding common interests as points of departure for working together.
For this reason we propose to structure the forum differently. There will be two days of workshops, containing 11-15 workshops per day. One afternoon/evening will be spent visiting a local site together, and much of the remaining time will be dedicated to 12 laboratories and 1 or 2 creation intensives. Instead of performances in the evenings we will use the evenings for informal sharings of work done during the forum, with the possibility of one or two evenings reserved for performance projects that have been pre-made (or other activities).
*This year, we have chosen to investigate the nature of the event without a formal theatrical space. If you are interested in attending Performática with a pre-made performance please note that there will be no formal theatrical space with which to present your work.
Defining the Forum
In an effort to generate more dialogue and possibility between presenting artists, the process of defining the forum will occur in a series of stages. Most essentially, we are asking that all participants in Performática 2012 be willing to engage with other participants in order to adapt and evolve initial proposals in order to generate actions that emerge from the event itself rather than collect prefabricated presentations of already proven notions.
The 1st selection stage will consist of a selection committee reviewing the proposals and determining which projects lend themselves to participation within the model we are laying out. Criteria will include: viability, openness to collaboration, clarity of intent, contribution to diversity, and empathy with the mission of Performática.
After the 1st stage, selected artists will have one month to meet in a virtual online forum to discuss and evolve the nature of laboratories together. Interest and collaboration groups will form through these conversations. These groups will then be responsible for pre-determining a method of working that they will bring to the forum. At the end of this month the organizers will use the conversations and ideas generated in the online forum to formulate a calendar for the forum that students will then register for in March. (Due to time and space constraints we propose that all laboratory projects will meet 3-4 times during the week, but this could change during the virtual phase depending on the methodology chosen by each group.)
The event will be built on the following guiding questions:
What can we do together?
Can we generate something from our shared experience?
How can we construct collaborative methodologies that contribute to enriching and nourishing our personal practices and, as a result, intensifying the possibilities for transformation in the field?
Laboratory
An open and flexibly structured meeting point for the elaboration of questions, creative projects, actions, and dialogue. It is our hope that we can build the content of the laboratories together based on the imaginative proposals of the participants. To this end we are asking that applicants submit a written proposal detailing their topics and passions for the structure of the laboratory sessions. These proposals would ideally be open to development within the laboratory framework and have a collaborative tendency. They would be structured in time frames that allow for others to also have a voice. You should be able to involve participants in your proposal as well as participate in those of others. Groups will have co-leadership.

Workshops
Past workshops have included: Techniques, Improvisational Study, Composition, Performance, Dance and Technology, Bodywork and Somatic Studies, Voice and Movement, Physical Theater, among others. While honoring and respecting these categories, we want to invite a reconsideration of the traditional workshop dynamic. Rather than reinforcing the notion of a teacher delivering knowledge to a group of students, we encourage proposals that explore multiple dimensions of interaction between the participants.
Performances
If you are interested in performing, we encourage you to consider bringing work that would be enriched within the frame of the forum.
If the realization of your artistic vision in a high definition theater is imperative to your participation, this is not the year to try and attend Performática.
Creation Intensive
Building on suggestions from past participants, we are proposing a new idea this year. The creation Intensive is a chance for a limited number of creative projects to be realized during the week of the event. These projects will be led by a single artist or, preferably, a collaborative team and will have daily rehearsals within which a committed group of participants will journey together toward some creative intention. These projects would ideally result in a work to be shared in an informal studio or site-specific context on the last day of the forum.
Conditions for Participation
Depending on the number of applications we receive, we are envisioning a group of 40 artists who will come together to share* their work and presence through teaching, studying, informal performance platforms and the laboratory.
*We would like to encourage the idea that everyone could be a participant in the proposals of another participant. If you would rather not be a participant in another’s work, please let us know in your application.
In years past we have had a more flexible policy regarding assistance but last year we framed the requirements a bit differently and it contributed greatly to a successful experience. So...in order to optimize the potential of the gathering, to participate in Performática 2012 applicants must be able to commit to attending the entire forum (7 days and 6 nights. Monday morning through-Sunday afternoon).
